Forward Directions
A segment from N.T. Wright’s Jesus and the Victory of God (Minneapolis: Fortress, 1996):
“We must take the historical questions & challenges on board; we cannot retreat into a private world of ‘faith’ which history cannot touch (what sort of a god would we be ‘believing’ in if we did?). The forward direction may not be comfortable, either for scholarship or the church. Forward directions seldom are; and I do not say that with the glee of the scholar who sees that his own agenda will be uncomfortable for everybody else, though not for him.”
